20130630 End of the World, End of the Journey

Santiago felt like just another stopover town. It was cool- I got my compostela and saw a couple of pilgrims I hadn't seen in a few weeks. But it felt like Burgos and Leon and Logrono.

Finisterre really felt like the end of my journey. On the way up the hill to the western-most point of the continent, I noticed that there was a mass starting at the tiny chapel Igrexa de Santa Maria. It was packed with locals and pilgrims. They had a girls choir, with a young girl in the back just singing her heart out. The congregation sang along and the priest gave a hearty sermon, even though I had no idea what he was saying. I suddenly got it.

My second and last spiritual moment was in that church: the Holy Spirit is people. It's community, people together. This is the lesson that has been trying to come through to me this whole way: the solitary contemplation made the serendipitous roadside pilgrim conversation meaningful, the circumstances and activity made pilgrims open up to each other like you never would in real life, the fact that the pilgrims shared everything with each other along the way, including emotional support, a listening ear, and sometimes just singing together or sharing a meal. THIS is what the lesson is. I get it now.

NOW I feel like my journey is done.

I'm ready to stop walking.

I love you and can't wait to talk to you when I get home.

I will be spending much energy in convincing you to do at least a portion of this.

PS the order of the pictures I send you is the order in which I saw them.

20130614 Hospital de Orbigo, Spain

 Hospital de Orbigo, Spain

No, I'm not in the hospital, this really is the name of the town!

I was very satisfied (and relieved) with my decision to bus out of the concrete. This morning I did that. Before leaving Leon (which is awesome, btw), and while humming Eminem's Business, I took stock of my pack and yet again purged. I had to lighten my load (again).

I tossed:
Extra water bottle
3rd pair socks
Iodine
Alcohol wipes
Most of the Laundry soap
Cut a small piece off the bar of soap, left the rest
Extra shorts
Safety pins (hey, every little bit...)

I seriously considered tossing the sleeping bag, but the temperature has been too unpredictable.

I took the bus to 8km outside of Virgen del Camino (I think that was the name- I'll have to look it up later) and walked here. A nice short day, knee was fine, shin was fine, sunburn hurt like hell.

I feel good. I'm ready to go back to routine tomorrow. I'm aiming for Astorga, the last city for a few days, and if there's a bus through the concrete, I have every intention of hopping on!!!!!!

I should be at Cruz de Ferro day after tomorrow, if all goes well.

Btw, the stone bridge into Orbiga is the longest still-standing medieval bridge in (Spain?Europe? Not sure). Obviously there used to be a big raging river. And also obviously, I am relaxing with a glass of wine and admiring its beauty. Rural Spain is just breathtaking.

Love you!

20130613 Leon, Spain

Everything's fine here. Well, I had a very exhausting day and am in Leon, though I am on the mend, I think. I started walking this morning, and the tendons in my left shin started squeaking and hurting and also my arches like always, and to top it all off I felt a twinge in my left knee. Plus yesterday it finally decided to act like June and I have a very bad sunburn on my left shoulder and behind my left knee. Also my mood was not in a good place, maybe because of my shin. I started thinking why the hell am I doing this?? This is so stupid, why are we all doing this, what is this proving?

I made it to Sahagun (all that damn concrete!), but it took me twice as long as it should have, I was walking so slow. I sat in a cafe and looked at the map and saw that tomorrow and the next day were through more cities, meaning more fucking concrete and I just wanted to cry. I told the bartender to call me a taxi. When the taxi driver asked me where to go I didn't know what to tell him. I thought about it and then said Leon. I just could not deal with more concrete through the rest of Sahagun and then Mansilla and then Leon, but I had to see Leon (how could I come all the way to Spain and not see Leon??).

The driver said he would drive along the Way as much as possible instead of the highway. I was too down to tell him i didnt care, so i just didnt say anything. As we were driving, I was looking at the stream of pilgrims on the senda and I told the driver they looked like cockroaches. He laughed so hard it made me laugh too, even though at first I was completely serious.

So I got here at noon and have been sleeping ever since (its 4pm). Maybe my body just needs a break. I might take a rest day tomorrow, I'll see how I feel in the morning. I know I will start walking again, I just don't know if it will be tomorrow or the next day.

Please don't worry about me, I know this sounds like I'm really down, but I know me- ill pick right up again, I just need a rest. I have been walking every single day for 2weeks and 5days!! That's alot and I'm sure my body is rebelling and telling my mind to take up the cause and rebel too so that I will take a rest day.

Now that I have slept for 4 hours, I am going to see the massive Leon cathedral, maybe find some feet pictures to take, have some famous Castilian pastries or maybe tapas(or both!) and then sleep some more.

I promise to email tomorrow and let you know if I will rest again or if the Way calls me back.

Love you!

20130609 I walked into the Meseta yesterday

re: 20130608 Atapuerca, Spain

The picture of the cross isn't Cruz de Farro. Cruz de Farro will be in a little over a week from now. I will definite let you know when I've stopped there! Btw I walked into the Meseta yesterday and will be on it until about Leon. It's beautiful and so peaceful! I don't know why people say to skip it????
